Kerala, known for its lush greenery and cultural richness, provides a backdrop that inspires architectural ingenuity. A residence in this vibrant state exemplifies a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, standing as a testament to thoughtful design and functionality. The house is situated in a serene neighbourhood of Kakkanad, surrounded by Kerala's iconic areca and coconut groves. The site itself posed challenges, including a narrow and undulated profile, but these constraints were turned into opportunities to create a unique and dynamic design.
Anchored in the principles of contextual sensitivity, the design embraces Kerala's climatic sensibilities while integrating modern aesthetics. Drawing from the vernacular architectural vocabulary, the house employs earthy tones and natural materials, echoing the state's cultural essence. The residence features a carefully planned layout catering to the needs of a modern family. The ground floor hosts an expansive living-dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and curved diagonal veranda. The upper floor houses more private spaces, including bedrooms, home studio and a balcony with brick cladded jalis. Special emphasis is placed on the integration of functional spaces like a home office and utility areas, reflecting the evolving lifestyles of today.
The material palette is a fusion of tradition and innovation. Locally sourced materials such as teak and mahogany wood bring warmth and authenticity, while elements like exposed wirecut bricks and terracotta jalis add texture and charm. Touches of color, often seen in vibrant red accents, enliven the otherwise subtle spaces, creating a balance between calmness and vitality.
