House in Between

Project name: House in Between

Builtup area:  3300 sqft

Site area:  15 cent

Location: Perinthalmanna, Kerala

House in Between is a multi-generational family home built for a NRI couple. clients had specific desires for their new home, that seamlessly incorporates the tropical climatic conditions of the region, feature a minimalist design approach and establish a separation between public and private spaces.

HinB's location on a former coconut plantation or 'Thenginthopp' near Perinthalmanna town provides an interesting backdrop. The site was initially planned to be divided into two sections, with the area adjoining the road reserved for commercial development and the rest for the house. However, as the design process evolved, the section close to the road took on a new purpose as a multipurpose garden space. This area now serves as a play area for kids and provides additional parking space. The landscaping here features a variety of trees with lush foliage, functioning both as a buffer and a natural shading element.

The architectural concept and form of the house evolves from a set of varying rectangular volumes that have been strategically positioned in a grid. The emphasis on these volumes and the resulting in-between spaces indicates a successful attempt to create a balance between openness and privacy, which is crucial for a multi-generational family home. These masses form a stepping morphology that is climate responsive maximizing natural ventilation, sunlight, and shading. This approach enhances the comfort and well-being of the residents while reducing the need for excessive artificial cooling or heating.
